Reuben was born to John Richardson and Martha Smith in 1791. It is known that at this time John was not married to Martha. Reuben's birth name was Reuben Smith, later on when his parents married (sometime around 1795) his name was changed to Reuben Smith Richardson. Eventually, he dropped the Smith and simply went by Reuben Richardson.

1841 Census shows a Reuben Richardson born around 1791 in Hartwell, Northamptonshire. In his home is a wife named Pearcy and three children; Sarah, Ezekiah (spelled Esckiah in the actual census - probably too hard to spell for whomever was doing the census sheet) and Ebenezer.
