On William's gravestone the last line reads "four of his children" - the rest of whatever this phrase says is underground. His stone had been broken in half, the top half now is all there is and some of it is under the soil in order to keep the stone upright.
Based on the 1861 English Census, William and Maria had 5 children. By 1861 Maria had died and William was a widower living in Abingdon, St. Helen, Berkshire with his five children.
By 1871 William was still an unmarried widower living in Abington, Berkshire (in the Hamlet of "Shippen") with three of his children - Shadrach, Ann Jane & Alice. None of these children were married in 1871.
