Although Walter was born in Ceylon (sometimes referred to as the "East Indies") his cultural background was Scottish.
Research Notes:
In 1851 Walter McKenzie was listed as owning 12 acres of Woodland in, what is now known today, as Rosedale, Toronto.
Also, in 1851, Walter was a "Clerk of Services" according to the Census of Upper Canada. Eventually, Walter would own considerable amounts of Real Estate in what would come to be known as Rosedale. By the time his daughter, Mary Agnes (Agnes) married John Hoskin in 1866 Walter would have built a large home on Castle Frank.
In John Hoskin's Obituary (1921) Walter was referred to as "Walter MacKenzie of Castle Frank" (they miss-spelled Walter's last name). Walter's son in law, John Hoskin, would build his estate house/home on the adjoining property of Walter's - It would become known as "The Dale" and it stood at #21 Dale Street, Rosedale, Toronto.
Walter's was listed as a "Barrister" by trade in the 1871 Census and also on his death certificate.

Walter had been ill for 17 months prior to his death.
Walter married Sarah McKenzie {2229} [MRIN: 771]. (Sarah McKenzie {2229} was born about 1825 in Spain.)
